In January of 2008, I got my GMRS (WQIB671) and ham radio (vanity call N2BMW) licenses. My original plan was to only get GMRS and a UHF radio to help me lead a large vehicle caravan where listeners are all using Motorola Talkabouts, but I figured I might as well get my ham (amateur radio) license as well.
The GMRS license requires no test - only that you pay $85. For my ham license, I went to a guided study session that includes the test at the end run by BAEARS. I may get my general (next tier of amateur radio license) in a few months.
I picked up a Kenwood TH-F6A handheld and a Kenwood TM-V71A mobile radio as well as a few Puxing 777 Chinese handheld units to play around with.
You can see pictures of my mobile installation here.
